About

What is "Stewardship"?

Wherever people are working the land, be they farmers or gardeners, there is growing awareness and concern about pesticide use,
degradation of soils, wasted or contaminated water, or noisy machinery and air pollution.

More and more, the realization is dawning on us that humans are
"but Stewards of the Earth".
Where better to start making the difference than our own back yards?
Working with nature makes more sense than keeping up an endless, frustrating fight.

Stewardship Natural Landscape Design can show you an easier, more natural way to a beautiful garden!

10 Guiding Principles:
Good Design for Organic Landscapes

The organic approach in landscape design…
  • … Is about creating functioning ecosystems – rather than just collections of pretty plants.
  • … Is a synergy of aesthetic, utilitarian, and ecological design objectives.
  • … Strives to minimize resource imports into, and exports out of, the landscape; and encourages recycling and reusing materials.
  • … Uses bold and simple shapes; allows for harmonious layout and generous proportions of garden rooms, paths, and planting areas.
  • … Protects soil from compaction, erosion, and contamination; actively promotes soil microbial life.
  • … Protects water from contamination and from wasteful use; sees water as the basis for soil life and plant life.
  • … Puts the right plant into the right place, or (on a small scale) modifies the place to accommodate the plant.
  • … Selects and places trees and shrubs where they will still fit in at maturity.
  • … Promotes great biological diversity of plants, micro-organisms, insects, birds, and other animals, including people.
  • … Acknowledges growth, development, and change.
