Why use a designer?
A professional landscape design (or consultation) will save time, money, and resources in the long run.
It will prevent you from making common landscaping mistakes, such as making improper plant selections and creating high maintenance situations.
Here is how it works:
First, by doing a thorough site analysis - taking stock of existing features, and exposing the landscape's strengths as well as its weaknesses.
Next, by conducting a detailed interview with all users of the green space - to find out exactly what you have in mind, for the present and in the future.
Then, by carefully assessing the site's natural potential - in order to determine what uses these conditions can naturally sustain.
Finally, all this information is matched and balanced in a comprehensive, long term plan - the basis for many years of enjoyment to come. This overview plan may contain all the necessary information if the area is small - or it may be accompanied by extra detail plans for planting schemes, plant lists, hardscape details, suggested schedules for achieving the goals over time, organic maintenance principles, and notes on soil building, irrigation, and troubleshooting.
(A consultation can achieve much of the same within a less formal framework.)
Wherever feasible, I will present you with a draft for discussion, before I proceed with the final drawing.
Many of my clients choose to work away on their projects in their own time, or to ask their regular gardeners for help. However, if this is a more extensive plan, I will be happy to recommend a number of local landscape contractors. Together we can come up with an estimate on the anticipated cost, and a strategy to implement the plan to everybody's satisfaction!
